Toyota’s European flagship, the Avensis range of saloons, hatchbacks and estate cars, gets its midlife overhaul four years after launch with minor restyling inside and out. The big news, though, is two punchy and refined new diesel engines to join the current 2.2-litre, 148hp oil-burner. As before, impeccable reliability, superb safety measures and solid build are standard. Cabins are roomy and comfortable. Prices remain keener than usual for a Toyota because competition is so hot and sector sales are declining. The downside is that while a revised Avensis won’t let you down, it still won’t fire your automotive passion.
